NYPD hero cop Joseph Michael Herbert, who nabbed notorious 'New York Zodiac Killer,' dead at 68
""He was the best boss I ever worked for and the sharpest detective I ever met," retired homicide Detective Louie Savarese said of Herbert. "He lived and breathed the job, and the only thing he loved more than the NYPD was his wife, Barbara, and his daughter, Kristen. "It was an honor and privilege to work for and with him," Savarese said."
""Joe's command of crime conditions and criminals was unrivaled in our department," former NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told The Post. "His word at compstat was considered gospel. "He was a wonderful man with little ego and a great colleague," Boyce added."
Joseph Herbert served 38 years with the NYPD, joining in 1981 at age 23 and becoming a detective within five years. He earned the Medal of Valor in 1985 and rose to deputy chief and commanding officer prior to retiring in 2017. He led the arrest of Heriberto Seda, the New York Zodiac Killer, in 1996; Seda is serving a 235-year sentence. Herbert served on the Joint Terrorism Task Force after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. He was nicknamed "Pork Chop," enjoyed the New York Rangers, cared for family in Rockaway Beach, worked on an autobiography, and died Sept. 30 at 68.
