The MTA reported over 4 million riders daily from July 15 through 17, marking a significant summer milestone not seen since 2019. Despite weather challenges, ridership remained robust. Governor Kathy Hochul noted the system's improved performance, anticipating 2025 could be the best year for on-time service. Seven occasions of hitting the 4 million mark in three weeks indicate a trend. Expanded access for students and increasing OMNY usage contributed to this surge, alongside decreasing crimes and rising satisfaction across the transit network.
From July 15 through 17, the MTA logged 4,046,610, 4,121,751 and 4,029,692 trips, respectively, marking the first time since 2019 that the system has seen that kind of sustained summer crush.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated, "We're delivering a transit system that is safer and more reliable, and New Yorkers have responded by riding in record numbers."
This is the first summer NYC students can use their MetroCards 24/7, leading to increased ridership with more freedom during school breaks.
The tap-and-go revolution is in full swing, with OMNY usage jumping to 75-percent during the week of July 14, reflecting New Yorkers' preference for convenience.
