NY liquor store licenses: State rejects 70% of new applications in 2025
"According to a New York Post report, the State Liquor Authority (SLA) is rejecting up to 70% of license applications this year. They cite fears that new stores could force existing shops out of business. The crackdown comes as alcohol sales in New York have plunged by as much as 25% this year, with similar drops last year, according to the Post and liquor license attorney Max Bookman."
"The downturn has forced retailers to take drastic measures, as per the Post. At least 106 liquor licenses were voluntarily surrendered this year, leaving 3,330 retail licenses statewide as of Aug. 25, according to records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Several longtime establishments have shuttered permanently, including Winfield-Flynn Wine & Spirits in Murray Hill, which closed after 74 years following a lawsuit over $100,000 in unpaid bills. Wine Geeks in Armonk closed in March after 15 years in business."
"This decline mirrors broader changes in American drinking habits. Alcohol consumption has plummeted nationwide as 53% of Americans now believe even moderate drinking isn't healthy, compared to 28% a decade ago. Wine has been hit hardest as younger customers increasingly favor spirits, beer and cannabis. Baby Boomers-historically the biggest wine consumers- are aging out, while Millennials and Gen Z drink less wine and prefer alternatives like ready-to-drink cocktail"
