A 75-year-old woman was sucker punched in the back, causing her to fall to the ground at the 125th Street platform in East Harlem around 12:30 a.m. Police report that the assailant attacked without provocation and fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Despite worrying incidents of violence in the subway system, the overall felony assaults have dropped approximately 5% this year, down to 449 from 471 the previous year.
This incident follows another random act of violence where a 28-year-old woman was struck as she exited a No. 3 train on the Upper West Side, highlighting a concerning trend in subway safety.
Authorities indicate that while there has been a recent spike in violent incidents, the statistics show a slight decrease in both felony and misdemeanor assaults on the subway this year.
