A new OMNY transit card will replace the MetroCards given to public school students since 1997, offering students the ability to use the new cards all day long for four rides every 24 hours, unlike the previous three rides with time limitations.
The OMNY cards will operate year-round, including on weekends, holidays, and summers, signaling a shift towards a digital tap-and-go system from MetroCards, coinciding with the city's MetroCard phase-out plan for all transit riders.
