An 18-year-old employee of the New York State parks system, Dariel Vasquez, tragically lost his life fighting a forest fire in Sterling Forest.
In response to the emergency, Governor Kathy Hochul's office announced that state officials were actively working to contain two wildfires in Sterling Forest.
The larger fire covered approximately 300 acres and extended into New Jersey, while a second smaller fire near the Appalachian Trail was about nine acres.
As wildfires spread, New York City experienced significant smoke, resulting in a statewide air quality alert being issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
