New York Settles Suit That Said Its Housing Rules Worsened Segregation

"Under the terms of the settlement, the city will reduce the percentage of affordable apartments set aside for people living in the same community district as a new development to 20 percent from 50 percent until 2029. Starting in May 2029, the share drops to 15 percent."
"Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement that the agreement allows the city to maintain the community preference policy, which he said was critical to adding affordable housing in partnership with communities across the city. Craig Gurian, the executive director of the Anti-Discrimination Center, who represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement that the agreement demonstrated that city officials have turned away from the discredited politics of racial turf and said out loud, in words, that all of our neighborhoods need to belong to all of us."
