Madeline Feliciano will receive $28.75 million in the settlement following her grandson's suicide attempt in a Rikers Island jail cell. Nicholas Feliciano, then 18, was left hanging for nearly 8 minutes, resulting in brain damage.
The incident, captured on video, led to indictments of three correction officers and a captain in 2022 on charges of reckless endangerment and official misconduct. The settlement aims to support Nicholas' medical care for the rest of his life.
Alongside the settlement, Madeline Feliciano and her lawyers are advocating for the closure of Rikers Island. The New York City Council planned to close Rikers by 2026 and replace it with smaller jails, though Mayor Eric Adams has expressed concerns about this plan.
