Part of a 20-story high-rise in the Bronx collapsed Wednesday morning, leaving one corner from the ground floor to the roof a pile of rubble. The fire department reported no immediate injuries and said crews responded to a reported gas explosion that collapsed an incinerator shaft in the public housing building. Police said they received 911 calls just after 8am about a building collapse at the Mitchel Houses and observed a partial collapse upon arrival. Videos showed a cloud of dust billowing over the block around 8:10am. Mayor Eric Adams said he was briefed and urged people to avoid the area; incinerator shafts were once used to burn trash but have largely been replaced with compactors.
