New area code proposal for NYC advances to public hearings
Briefly

New York City is on the verge of introducing a new area code to accommodate growing demand, with existing codes projected to be exhausted by the end of 2026.
If the proposed new area code is approved, it will apply only to new numbers; current phone users in 347, 718, 917, and 929 will retain their numbers.
Public hearings held by the New York State Public Service Commission could pave the way for the new area code to be implemented six months before the expected exhaustion of the existing ones.
The city’s current area code situation reflects a historical evolution: the original 212 code was established in 1947, followed by 718, 917, and 347, each introduced as demand increased.
