On February 25, 2025, the MTA announced the opening of a new transfer tunnel connecting the 7 line at Grand Central Station to the 4, 5, and 6 lines. This addition significantly improves the transfer experience for commuters. Notably, the project involved innovative construction techniques that allowed work to be completed without interrupting train service, including the use of controlled low-velocity explosions. MTA Chair Janno Lieber highlighted the infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing customer flow, such as wider staircases and better access to platforms.
"This area didn't exist a year ago. Construction teams built a new staircase for the Flushing Line platform... all in an effort to improve customer flow."
"The technique involved controlled, low-velocity explosions, which had never been used in subways before, allowing us to keep all the services in Grand Central Station operating."
