A fire in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, on February 9 resulted in the death of Gregory Fernandez, 38, and injured two others. Firefighters struggled to combat the blaze due to parked cars blocking hydrants, prompting Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker to urge New Yorkers not to park their vehicles in front of hydrants. The incident highlights the dangers posed by obstructed access to emergency services and serves as a reminder of the consequences that can arise when basic safety rules are ignored.
I'm begging New Yorkers in all five boroughs: Please do not leave your cars on hydrants. Cars parked on hydrants are part of the reason we have the outcome that we have here today - this is a fatal fire.
Fire officials said they responded on the morning of Feb. 9 to a multiple-dwelling fire in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. When they arrived, units discovered fire coming out of a window from the building's third floor.
Upon entry, firefighters found two civilians inside the doorway. Overall, three people were taken to local hospitals where one of them was pronounced dead.
The cause of Fernandez's death will be determined by the medical examiner's office.
