MTA to get rid of remaining '80s orange-and-yellow-seated subway cars in 2025
Briefly

The MTA plans to gradually retire its 1,700-plus R46, R62/62A, and R68/R68A subway trains, introduced in the 1980s, as part of their 2025-2029 capital plan.
The old orange-and-yellow seating subway cars will be replaced by the new R211/R211S trains featuring modern amenities like wider doors, security cameras, and digital displays.
Despite the excitement surrounding the new subway cars, there have been challenges, such as the MTA pulling six R211 rail cars from service due to equipment problems.
The rollout of the R211s includes plans for gradual implementation, with the advanced trains already operating on lines A and C, marking a significant upgrade.
