In a tragic incident on Tuesday night, more than 100 people, mostly women and children, are feared missing after a wooden boat capsized in Niger State. The boat, originally designed to carry 100 passengers, was overloaded with about 300 people returning from an Islamic religious festival. As of Wednesday morning, search and rescue operations have recovered nine bodies; however, rescue officials express concerns that chances of finding more survivors are slim.
Authorities state that rescue workers have salvaged approximately 150 individuals from the disaster. Abdullahi Baba-Arah, director general of Niger State Emergency Management Agency, revealed that ongoing search efforts would hopefully locate additional survivors as recovery operations continue despite the tragic circumstances. The boat capsize accident in Mokwa has raised alarms due to its occurrence just 18 months after another catastrophic boat disaster in the same region that resulted in over 100 fatalities.
