"Catherine Almonte Da Costa, whom Mamdani just announced as director of appointments on Dec. 17, handed in her resignation hours after the Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey put a spotlight on vile, antisemitic and anti-NYPD posts made over a decade ago. In some of the horrific posts, Da Costa wrote about money-hungry jews and the Far Rockaway train is the Jew train."
"I spoke with the mayor-elect this afternoon, apologized, and expressed my deep regret for my past statements, she said in a media statement. These statements are not indicative of who I am. As the mother of Jewish children, I feel a profound sense of sadness and remorse at the harm these words have caused. As this has become a distraction from the work at hand, I have offered my resignation."
Catherine Almonte Da Costa was named director of appointments by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Dec. 17 and resigned the next day after problematic social media posts were publicized. The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey identified posts from 2011 and 2012 that contained antisemitic tropes and anti-NYPD statements, including references to "money-hungry jews" and "the Jew train." Da Costa issued an apology, expressed deep regret, identified herself as the mother of Jewish children, and offered her resignation. Mamdani accepted the resignation. Campaign sources said the posts did not surface during the vetting process.
