New York City's $2 billion project to repair a major leak in the Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies water to half of the city, has been delayed. Originally set for an eight-month shutdown to connect a bypass tunnel, the project was paused in November due to drought and low water levels in reservoirs. With concerns over precipitation levels, a new contract for construction must be negotiated to ensure that the project meets quality standards for the water supply, which serves nearly 10 million residents, with completion anticipated beyond 2027.
"A new contract must take every contingency into account to ensure we meet our critical responsibility of providing the highest quality water possible to nearly 10 million New Yorkers every day, without exception," said Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala.
The planned eight-month shutdown of the Delaware Aqueduct was announced last fall, but was paused in November due to a drought warning and low reservoir levels.
