Mamdani Officially Buries The QueensLink - Streetsblog New York City
Mayor Mamdani is moving forward with QueensWay Phase One, a park planned over abandoned train tracks in Central Queens, using $43 million included in his executive budget. Transit advocates for QueensLink sought a pause or a locked funding approach so a transit component could be incorporated or evaluated before construction. City Hall rejected the request after reviewing QueensLink’s initial business case and supporting statistics, stating that QueensWay will not block future transit service. QueensLink supporters estimate about 75,000 daily riders and a reduction of roughly 15,000 daily car trips, citing examples such as Maryland’s Purple Line and Georgia’s BeltLine where rails-to-trails efforts increased costs or hindered rail reactivation. The advocates’ evidence did not change the administration’s course.
""We asked to lock box the current funds for QueensWay, basically putting a pause on the project, so that we can incorporate some sort of transit component, or until we know the details of how a transit addition to the project would really work," said Hunter."
