Mamdani Is Shutting Down NYC's Disastrous AI Chatbot
"It was costing the administration around half a million dollars. That, in and of itself, is not something that can bridge this kind of a gap, but it's an indication of the ways in which money has been spent while refusing to account for the actual costs of what these programs are."
"yes, you can take a cut of your worker's tips."
"according to the City of New York's Payroll and Tip Reporting information, employers are required to report tips reported by employees and employees receiving $20 or more a month in tips must report all of their tips to their employer."
New York City faces a $12 billion budget gap that officials link in part to an unstable municipal AI system. A municipal chatbot called MyCity launched in late 2023, cost roughly $600,000 to build, and ran on Microsoft's Azure AI to help small business owners navigate local regulations. The chatbot produced incorrect legal guidance about tip handling while also correctly reciting some payroll information. The chatbot was described as functionally unusable and costly, prompting the current administration to target the system as part of spending and accountability measures.
