New York City will hold a lottery for 1,000 World Cup tickets priced at $50 for selected winners. Tickets will be allocated in batches covering group-stage and knockout-round games over the six-week tournament, with no tickets offered for the finals. Some early games are selling on secondary markets for roughly $500 to $800 for the cheapest seats. The $50 program includes round-trip tickets to games in New Jersey via bus. City Hall says the Host Committee, funded largely by New York and New Jersey taxpayer dollars, is providing the tickets. The mayor did not clearly state ticket costs when questioned and said there is no taxpayer funding for the allocation. New York City has sent $35 million to the Host Committee, and eligibility for residents outside the city remains unclear.
"New York City alone has sent $35 million to the Host Committee. It was unclear why New Yorkers outside the city weren't eligible for a similar program, as well as New Jersey residents."
