Adriano Abreu Bonifacio, a 39-year-old accused drug trafficker from Deer Park, received a UPS package containing 5 kilograms of fentanyl. This amount could kill over 2.5 million people, highlighting the severity of the fentanyl crisis in the region. After receiving a tip-off from California authorities, local police intercepted the package through a drug-detecting canine. Bonifacio was arrested after an undercover operation where he accepted the package. He's charged with major drug trafficking and is being held on a $500,000 cash bail, demonstrating law enforcement's commitment to fighting the opioid epidemic.
"This indictment represents our office's unwavering commitment to combating the fentanyl overdose crisis," Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement.
The package contained 5 kilograms of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that's potentially deadly even in small doses, prosecutors said.
