Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate, is launching a plan aimed at reducing street and subway homelessness among those with severe mental illness.
Lander believes that by focusing on the approximately 2,000 homeless individuals with serious mental health issues and placing them into supportive housing, the problem can be solved.
His plan, which includes expanding subway outreach teams and utilizing a housing first approach, is backed by funding estimates around $100 million initially, with ongoing costs thereafter.
The urgency of tackling street homelessness in New York has grown due to heightened safety concerns following violent incidents involving homeless individuals in subway systems.
