In a harrowing 20-hour ordeal, a kayaker in his 60s was trapped in rocks, leading to the amputation of his leg during an extensive rescue effort.
Emergency teams received a distress signal from a smartwatch at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and began their challenging rescue operation, faced with deteriorating conditions.
The kayaker spent the night partly submerged while medical teams stayed with him. Despite multiple rescue attempts, his condition required drastic action after consulting with him.
Doug Oosterloo, acting assistant commissioner of the Tasmania Police, described the rescue as an 'extremely challenging and technical operation,' emphasizing the difficult decision to amputate.
