A significant wildfire in New Jersey's Pine Barrens has expanded to over 20 square miles, affecting air quality in the New York City region. Authorities warn that smoke may cause health issues, encouraging residents to stay indoors. Although the fire has threatened structures and led to evacuations, no injuries have been reported. Dry weather has heightened fire danger across New York state, with officials noting this fire is one of the most severe in nearly two decades. Emergency personnel will remain on-site for ongoing monitoring and control efforts.
This is still a very active fire. As we continue to get this under full control, the expectation is that the number of acres will grow and will grow in a place that is unpopulated.
Higher-than-normal pollution levels were expected Thursday in New York City, Rockland and Westchester counties, and in Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk counties.
