Mariam, a 25-year-old owner of Mamali NYC originally from Georgia, posted video of a customer mocking her accent while placing an order. The customer said he could not understand her pronunciation of the word "bowl" and insisted she should speak better English because she works in America. He asked how long she had lived in the U.S.; she replied four years, and he ridiculed her for not learning better English. He demanded to speak to another owner, refused to accept that she was the owner, raised his voice, and repeatedly told her to "go learn some English."
"You're working in America, so you should speak good English. That's not an excuse."
"Four years, and you didn't think to learn better English?"
"Is it 'bowl' or is it 'bone?' Are you serving me a bone?"
