I walked every block of Manhattan. It was the best way to get to know my new city.

Krissy Oechslin moved to New York City in February 2024, driven by a desire to walk every city block—a goal rooted in inspiration from a prior New York Times article. However, Charlotte, North Carolina, her former home, was not conducive to pedestrian exploration. Upon arriving in Manhattan, she embarked on a 13-month journey of walking the streets, discovering unique neighborhoods even seasoned residents might overlook. Despite challenges in mapping her route, she completed over 99.5% of her walking project, finding joy and a deeper connection with her new city in the process.
It took me 13 months of on-and-off effort to walk every block. When I was finished, I felt I saw so many unique parts of Manhattan.
Moving to New York in February 2024, I thought exploring every block of Manhattan would be a cool way to get to know my new city.
Originally, I planned to both bike and walk the city... in the end, I walked over 99.5% of the project.
During the pandemic lockdowns, I toyed with the idea of doing it in Charlotte, but it wouldn't really be possible—Charlotte is very car-centric.
