Born in Puerto Rico, Angel Lopez became the museum's first Latinx permanent curator, part of the curation team for This Is New York exhibit.
Mr. Lopez and his wife decided to stay in New York after initially planning to move to Istanbul or Lebanon to study Islamic culture.
After different apartment stints, they bought a brownstone in Mott Haven, South Bronx, where they now live with their daughter.
