Heart of Times Square evacuated as suspicious package prompts bomb squad investigation
Briefly

On Monday morning, a suspicious package was discovered in front of the NYPD precinct in Times Square, prompting an immediate investigation and evacuation of commuters and tourists. The situation created a ghost town in one of Manhattan's busiest locations. Police blocked off the area while they examined the cylindrical device found outside the precinct. After determining the package was non-hazardous, crowds were allowed to return, and subway services remained unaffected. An ongoing investigation seeks to clarify the intentions behind the package's appearance.
Once the NYPD's bomb squad deemed the package non-hazardous, the crowds were allowed to return. Subway service at the busy local stations was not disrupted, the MTA said.
The cylindrical device was discovered in front of the police department's small Times Square Precinct building at 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue around 10:30 a.m.
Eerie aerial footage of the scene during the evacuation showed one of the busiest spots in Manhattan at a standstill with only a few police vehicles and officials in the area.
It was not immediately clear whether the bundle was deliberately made to appear suspicious.
