Gutsy mermaid to tackle shark-inhabited channel to become first female NYC native to complete open swimming Triple Crown

Fleur Sohtz, 47, a Brooklyn-born Upper East Side resident and chief marketing officer, will attempt to swim the English Channel on Aug. 29 to complete the Triple Crown of open-water swimming. A dedicated kayaker will guide her along a route that can stretch to about 26 miles because of strong currents. The swim could take 12 to 16 hours in roughly 69-degree water, and rules prohibit touching the kayak or wearing a wetsuit. Sohtz already completed the Catalina Channel and a circumnavigation of Manhattan. Previous open-water swims have included encounters with marine life, including a shark that bumped her during a night channel crossing.
