Howling winds on Tuesday threatened to hasten the spread of the 5,000-acre Jennings Creek fire that was burning on the border between New York and New Jersey. Gusts of up to 35 miles per hour and drought conditions in the Northeast could cause the blaze to grow rapidly, affecting air quality in New York City.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire was only 10 percent contained in New York and 10 percent contained in New Jersey. Some areas remain too rugged for emergency vehicles to access.
In response to the fire risks, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a statewide burn ban in New York, prohibiting outdoor fires and discouraging grill use through Nov. 30.
On Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a red flag alert for southern New York and Connecticut, and northeastern New Jersey, cautioning that low humidity and high winds could lead to dangerous fire conditions.
