NYPD deployed more officers to the West Indian Day Parade than to Times Square on New Year's Eve. After the parade ended, seven people were shot and two people were slashed between about 5:30 and 9:30 p.m., including a 14-year-old boy. On Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street, a 40-year-old woman was shot in the left ankle and a 53-year-old man was hit in the neck and right leg; restaurant staff applied pressure to the man's wound and he later returned to thank them. A suspect in that shooting is in custody and may have ties to the Nine Trey gang. Organizers and community safety partners said months of preparation were overshadowed by isolated incidents, and the parade has a history of prior violence including a 2024 fatal, four injuries and a gang-related shooting.
The reality is, is if it's going to happen, it's going to happen,
Started to bleed. One of my guys put some paper towels on it. And then within the next about five minutes, swarming of cops,
We feel that these incidents, isolated incidents, is overshadowing the weekend,
Everybody was having fun. It was good, clean fun when I walked through,
