Gauff struggles with new serve, holds on for win
"It wasn't the best, but I'm happy to get through."
"I had so many chances. ... I was just like, 'Eventually, one of these is going to go my way,'"
"I'm trying to improve with each match."
"really tough and mentally exhausting"
Coco Gauff won a tight, nearly three-hour US Open match against Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5. Gauff double-faulted 10 times and was broken six times, including a double-fault on her first service game and two double-faults when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third. She twice failed to close the second set despite leading by a break and recovered after falling 5-all in the third to break back and serve out on her second chance. Gauff added biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan to her team and described practices with him as mentally exhausting while aiming to improve her serve.
