Despite crewmates' efforts to assist him, he was pronounced dead shortly before emergency services were called. The incident occurred as the crew was deploying heavy nets for prawns. Following the accident, Odonkor's trawler returned to Castletownbere, where investigations began. His passing has shocked the local fishing community, and a full post mortem is scheduled as part of an inquest into the circumstances of his death.
The trawler immediately returned to Castletownbere and arrived early on Wednesday morning after the accident, as Mr. Odonkor was pronounced dead before emergency services could be dispatched.
Mr. Odonkor, a member of the crew since 2017, was described as an experienced fisherman and highly respected workmate by fishing industry officials.
