First Jan. 6 Rioter to Enter Capitol Gets More Than 4 Years in Prison

Michael Sparks, the first rioter to breach the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was sentenced to 53 months in prison for his role in the insurrection.
According to prosecutors, Sparks was found guilty of obstructing an official proceeding, and video evidence showed him entering the Capitol through a broken window.
Judge Timothy J. Kelly imposed a $2,000 fine along with the prison sentence and ordered Sparks to undergo three years of supervised release after imprisonment.
Sparks was part of the initial rioters who confronted Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman, who bravely delayed the mob’s advance towards Congress.
