"I'm not running for the Seanad again and I'm not expecting or seeking a taoiseach's nomination," Mr McGahon said, acknowledging his departure from public life.
Mr Harris had stressed during the campaign that Mr McGahon had been acquitted of assault by a court, but amid continuing fallout and damage to the party's reputation, the Taoiseach subsequently pointed out that there were two Fine Gael candidates running in the five-seat Louth constituency.
