"When I went to the prosthetic store for the first time, I saw so many other young people in there completely losing it and breaking down,"
"I knew I couldn't let that be my life."
"He helped me get back to normal again - I want to have kids and all that. So I had to get back in shape and everything anyway. I couldn't be lazy."
Louis Plumitallo lost his right leg at age 18 after a friend accidentally fired a loaded rifle. He left Suffolk Community College and relearned everyday tasks such as climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars, walking on sand, and showering. He used the gym as an outlet and trained two hours a day, drawing on his hockey background. Trainer Ed Darcy became a mentor who guided his fitness regimen and emotional recovery. He did not pursue therapy and relied on his trainer for support. He faced challenges with balance, weight gain, and prosthetic pain, and broke prosthetic components due to high activity before becoming a champion bodybuilder.
