"This defendant made a series of reckless and deliberate decisions that had deadly consequences. By driving at high speeds and running red lights, he turned a Brooklyn intersection into a death trap."
"A young mother lost her life, shattering her family, and today's sentence reflects the gravity of the harm he caused. My office will continue to hold accountable anyone who recklessly commits vehicular violence on our streets."
Kashawn Croswell, 28, was convicted in January of second-degree manslaughter and related charges and was sentenced to an indeterminate term of three to nine years. The crash occurred at approximately 3:21 a.m. on August 18, 2023, when Croswell drove through a Brooklyn intersection at about 60 mph and ran three red lights before striking another vehicle. The collision killed 21-year-old Shanti Joyner. Two other people sustained injuries: a 32-year-old with an ankle fracture and a 29-year-old with a wrist fracture. Croswell's girlfriend suffered a spinal fracture and was taken to a hospital. Video showed Croswell fleeing the scene with his injured girlfriend. Senior Assistant District Attorney Han Zhang and Assistant District Attorney Adriana Morquecho led the prosecution, with assistance from Zoë Feygin and Assistant District Attorney Jingu Chong. District Attorney Eric Gonzalez described the actions as reckless and pledged accountability for vehicular violence.
