A 911 call reported a person in the East River near Furman Street and Montague Street, across from Pier 11, around 1:03 p.m. on Nov. 30. Two NYPD Harbor Unit officers tossed a rescue float, then dove into the icy river to reach a 67-year-old man struggling to swim to shore. The officers swam him to nearby rocks where he was lifted out on a ladder. NYPD Emergency Service Unit, aviation, and scuba teams responded, assisted with the extraction, and transported the man to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition. The reason he entered the river remains unclear.
