At least 129 people were killed in an attempted jailbreak at the Democratic Republic of Congo's Makala prison, with many fatalities resulting from a stampede.
Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo stated that 24 inmates were shot dead by prison guards during the chaotic escape attempt, which left 59 others wounded.
The overcrowded Makala prison, designed for 1,500 inmates, currently holds over 12,000, leading to dire conditions contributing to the attempted jailbreak.
Past incidents of jailbreaks include a 2017 attack by a religious sect that freed numerous inmates, highlighting ongoing security challenges at the facility.
