Miguel Gabela, the new District 1 commissioner, is looking to implement a major downtown redevelopment plan championed by his predecessor, despite his prior opposition.
Gabela is addressing the homeless surge in Allapattah by revisiting the previous commissioner’s large-scale development plan, while distancing himself from its origins.
At his victory party, Gabela declared, "It's a new day for [the] city of Miami," positioning himself as a change from the old regime.
Despite his predecessor's controversies, Gabela asserts, "This has nothing to do with [Díaz de la Portilla]. ... This has to do with the homeless situation that was thrust upon us."
