Daughter's tribute to 'unbelievable' Kathleen Watkins, broadcaster and wife of Gay Byrne, who has died aged 90

Her daughter Suzy Byrne expressed the family's devastation over Ms Watkins' passing but reflected on their lucky memories, stating, 'She was just unbelievable.'

Suzy reflected Ms Watkins' deep influence on her grandchildren, sharing memories of how her mother, when told about expecting a grandchild, declared, 'I will forever be known as Nana Kit.'

Friend Maire-Louise O'Donnell described Ms Watkins as 'possibly one of the most cultured people,' highlighting her lifelong passion for theatre, film, poetry, and supporting young creatives.

Ms Watkins was a notable figure in Irish media, being the first continuity announcer on Telefís Éireann's inaugural broadcast in 1961, marking a significant milestone in Irish broadcasting.
