Cracks have appeared in the floor of the passenger waiting room at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Downtown Manhattan. The two cracks, several feet long, were first noted on July 6. One crack extends from the seating area to a window that overlooks New York Harbor. A commuter expressed her alarm regarding the cracks, especially with passenger weight potentially exacerbating the situation. A DOT spokesman indicated that the cracks appear superficial, but the area will be monitored. The terminal opened on February 8, 2005, with project costs rising to $201 million due to security measures after 9/11.
One of the cracks stretches from the seating area to a window that overlooks New York Harbor. A regular ferry commuter said that she found the situation alarming.
With people usually grouped up by the doors at either side when waiting to board, it's concerning to think that the weight of the crowds could be splitting the waiting area down the center.
A DOT spokesman said, 'What you describe appears to be superficial without any structural impacts. Of course, we will monitor the area and address it as necessary.'
The current Whitehall terminal opened on Feb. 8, 2005, under the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Costs for the project rose from $189 million to $201 million.
