Colombian illegal migrant learns fate for strangling NYC landlady over rent dispute
"This defendant brutally attacked Zoraida Leo after a rent dispute and then callously left her to die on the floor of her own home. No family should endure the loss of a loved one in such a cruel manner. We cannot undo this egregious harm, but with this sentence we have helped secure justice for Ms. Leo's family."
"He's a migrant who crossed the border illegally. How is it that the federal government let this delinquent go, only for him to kill an innocent woman - my sister? Vidal is an assassin."
"Vidal pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter last month and was sentenced by Queens Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant to 22½ years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision."
Davi Vidal, 20 at the time, strangled 55-year-old landlady Zoraida Leo in East Elmhurst, Queens, during a dispute over unpaid rent on Dec. 4, 2023. Leo was found dead by her son the following day in the bathroom entryway of her home after failing to appear. Vidal used his bare hands and a cord from an iron in the attack. Vidal pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 22½ years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer after Vidal's arrest. Family members condemned the killing and questioned his immigration status.
