The City Council voted against Bally's proposal to modify zoning for a $4 billion casino project on city-owned golf course land in the Bronx. Out of the votes, twenty-nine supported disapproval, while nine opposed it and four abstained. The request included significant changes, such as removing the site from city parkland. Bally's Chair expressed disappointment, citing fulfillment of requests from Council member Kristy Marmorato. Marmorato criticized the project for lacking sustainable growth benefits. City Hall condemned the voting decision, not confirming if a veto is planned.
Following the tradition of deferring to local Council members on land use issues, the Council aligned with Marmorato, who opposed the project. This is not real economic development, she said. It's a casino, and we all know what casinos bring: No sustainable growth.
Bally's Chair Soo Kim expressed disappointment over the Council's decision, mentioning that the company met all requests made by local Council member Kristy Marmorato, even as they changed.
