"Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously," Mamdani said during his inauguration speech."
"We may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try."
"The new mayor should accelerate New York's clean energy transition...[by] streamlining permitting for solar, battery storage and building electrification projects that too often get caught in red tape," Abramson wrote. "In addition to reducing emissions, we need to protect people from the impacts already unfolding around us...by speeding up coastal protection projects, upgrading sewers and drainage systems to handle heavier rainfall."
"Mamdani, at the state policy level, advocated for the Build Public Renewables Act, which passed and is being implemented," said Sheila Foster, a professor of climate at the Columbia Climate School and a member of the New York City Panel on Climate Change since 2016."
Tens of thousands gathered in lower Manhattan for Zohran Mamdani's inauguration despite below-average temperatures and gusty winds. Mamdani vowed to govern expansively and audaciously and pledged to try boldly even if efforts sometimes fail. The 34-year-old democratic socialist centered his campaign on inequality issues such as unaffordable childcare, rising rents and inaccessible public transportation. Climate change was not central to the inauguration or campaign. With federal climate policy retreating, New York has options to accelerate a clean energy transition, streamline permitting for solar, storage and electrification, and speed coastal protection and drainage upgrades. Mamdani advocated for the Build Public Renewables Act, which has passed and is being implemented.
