"It's tough. It's tough on him. It's tough on us"
"The whole reason we send him to this school is so he can get this instruction,"
"In my case, hopefully they follow his IEP, which says he shouldn't be on the bus with more than five children, to alleviate the length of time that he's traveling,"
A Brooklyn fourth grader with ADHD, anxiety, and dyslexia spends excessive time on school transportation to and from the Sterling School, sometimes totaling four to five hours per day. The prolonged rides cause the student to miss one-on-one morning literacy instruction central to his individualized education program. Parents report a bus route with about a dozen pickups and allege that rides exceeding 90 minutes violate rules. The student's IEP limits busmates to no more than five children to reduce travel time. Parents must rearrange work schedules to accommodate inconsistent pickup and drop-off times. The DOE states it operates 9,000 routes serving 150,000 students.
