Bronx judge Eugene Bowen released six migrant squatters on drugs and weapons charges against prosecutor recommendations. Previously, he set free two men who assaulted a police officer, causing public outrage.
In both instances, prosecutors had requested bail for the suspects, but Judge Bowen decided to release them without bail. The decisions have sparked criticism from the Police Benevolent Association union and others.
Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association union, expressed concern over the release of individuals who assaulted cops: 'Our streets and subways won't be safe if the cops protecting them aren't safe.'
Judge Eugene Bowen, elected as a Democrat in 2023, has been in office for a little more than a year and has repeatedly made controversial decisions, setting free individuals involved in serious criminal activities.
