Bronx Beats Brooklyn in New Housing Growth in 2023
Briefly

In 2023, for the first time in 11 years, the Bronx surpassed Brooklyn in the number of housing units built, with 9,842 units in the Bronx compared to 9,271 in Brooklyn.
There was a significant drop in housing permits issued in 2023, with only 16,359 permits - the lowest since 2016, possibly due to the end of the 421-a tax benefit.
32% of the permitted units in New York City were in Brooklyn in 2023, although there was an overall decline in the number of permits issued.
The DCP Director emphasized the imbalance in housing production, stating it contributes to rising rents, tenant-landlord power disparities and displacing New Yorkers from the city.
