"Including the new crop, the NYPD has hired 4,000 officers this year the highest number on record, according to the department. That kind of growth does not happen by chance. It happens when a profession earns the confidence of the city it serves, and when people see this work as something worth stepping forward for. That matters because there are people who would have you believe policing is a profession in retreat. Let me be clear: that narrative is wrong, Tisch said."
"The NYPD says the 4,000 new officers it has hired in 2025 have the department outpacing its attrition rate by 800. The attrition rate calculates the number of officers hired against the number of officers who have left the department. Yet over the past year, some 3,415 cops have quit or filed for retirement from the NYPD, according to the Police Benevolent Association, which represents the rank-and-file officers New Yorkers see on the streets every day."
The NYPD swore in 1,000 new recruits on Dec. 17 at the Police Academy in College Point; those recruits will officially become officers in about six months. Including the new cohort, the NYPD hired 4,000 officers in 2025, the department's highest annual total on record. The NYPD reports that the 4,000 hires outpace attrition by 800 officers. The Police Benevolent Association reports that some 3,415 officers quit or filed for retirement over the past year and calculates a 500-officer shortfall. The NYPD's headcount drew attention during the summer mayoral campaign after reports of about 300 departures per month.
