Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order blocking parts of a local law banning solitary confinement in NYC jails, just one day before the law was set to go into effect.
The law would have prohibited solitary confinement for detainees accused of rule violations beyond a four-hour de-escalation period during emergencies, as well as banning the use of restraints during transportation.
The move sparked criticism from officials like Jumaane Williams, who called it an abuse of power, while the City Council's response to the emergency executive order remains uncertain.
The Department of Correction cited concerns raised by the federal monitor overseeing the jails as the reason for issuing the state of emergency expected to last 30 days, with potential extensions by Mayor Adams.
