Borough President Vito Fossella announced at a press conference with the New York City Police Department that drivers are allowed to make turns from bus lanes on Hylan Boulevard outside peak hours. The official statistics reveal that there have been 32 collisions this year and seven in the recent month alone. Major road issues on Hylan Boulevard remain prevalent, and Fossella urged for a proactive city approach with improved signage to address the dangerous behavior of drivers.
According to officials at the press conference, there have been at least 32 collisions this year - and seven in the last four weeks alone, including one where one of the vehicles involved made a right turn from the middle lane in Dongan Hills.
Fossella also wanted New York City to assist with addressing the issue, which he called 'a serious problem.' 'We want the city to just take a more proactive approach to understand what's going on. Perhaps more signage, perhaps signs in the road bed itself, [or] bigger signs on the poles,' Fossella said.
Like any other major roadway citywide, Hylan Boulevard is certainly one of our major arterial roadways. [It] runs through pretty much the entire Island north to south. So you see a variety of traffic issues along this major corridor and we educate and enforce when necessary on a wide variety of conditions,
